Australian Marist Solidarity is pleased to report that Marist Solidarity Cambodia last week secured a grant from the Japanese Consulate in support of their grass-roots human security project.
On the 15th of February, Marist Solidarity Cambodia (MSC) representatives led by Brother Terry Heinrich and Brother Brian Kinsella attended a signing ceremony to announce the grant. H.E Hidehisa Horinouchi, the Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia was on hand to support the ceremony and co-sign the agreement. Also in attendance was other Japanese consulate representatives, MSC staff and supporters.
The grant will provide an IT/ tuition room and a connecting passage linking the LaValla School to the new MSC Community Village. Ambassador Horinouchi remarked that “It is expected to improve the educational environment for 80 children and youth with disabilities annually and provide the staff, teachers, and students with easier and safer access between the organization’s facilities.”
AMS is pleased to have helped secure this grant having provided grant writing assistance to MSC after responding to a 2016 Japanese Government call for bids in health and education support.
MSC’s projects now support:
- 90 students at LaValla Primary School; and
- 97 students living in supported accommodation in the Inclusive Education Program in Phnom Penh & Takhmao and attending mainstream secondary schools and universities.
There are also 51 staff employed by MSC, many of whom also live with a physical disability.
