On Wednesday the 8th of March the team at AMS in Brisbane welcomed several visitors including Father Padre Evaristo and Bren Milson from the Burleigh Heads Catholic Parish
One of the most recent projects at AMS has been the rebuilding the St Teresinha Catholic Junior High School in the remote town of Ossu in Timor Leste. The people of this region are mostly poor subsistence farmers but they see quality education as a way for their children to break this cycle.
The school was opened on January 17 2017. Padre Evaristo, the priest responsible for the school, visited the Brisbane office on Wednesday March 8 to thank personally the team and our donors. He spoke with deep appreciation of the local people for our work with them.
Accompanying him was Bren Milson, who with his wife Sue, have been the major drivers of a partnership between Burleigh Heads Catholic Parish and AMS to rebuild this school. AMS Timor-Leste projects’ co-ordinator Michael Coleman remarked: “While the Australian donors have been new partnerships for us our generous long standing German partners at Kindermissionswerk and Aid to the Church in Need have once again enabled the result of a fine school building to be constructed”. Across three countries a very collaborative effort has given young Timorese access to education and a different future.
This project is a part of AMS’s work with Fundacao Sao Jose (FSJ), the Diocese of Baucau’s education office. AMS will continue to work with FSJ to determine and support educational opportunities in the Diocese in the coming years. Contact us for more information.
