Marist Brothers High School is an all-boys high school situated in Suva, Fiji. The High School was built in 1946 by the Brothers. Prior to this the Primary School and High School shared facilities at the original site of Marist education in Fiji (Suva School) where its origins date back 125 years.
Headmaster of the Marist Brother High School Ben Alacakau recently visited AMS to meet the team and to better understand our work and the support we provide our local partners in the region as he sets about transforming a school that has remained largely untouched since its inauguration some 71 years ago.
Mr Alacakau notes “the School has strong origins producing several Fijian Prime Ministers, delegates and sports personalities. However, over the years the schools infrastructure has aged and is in need of a lot of repairs.” Mr Alacakau continued by stating that the school “needs to improve its infrastructure which will in turn improve it’s culture,” believing that a culture shift will put the school back at the forefront of education and sport.
Mr Alacakau is new to the school having previously served as High Commissioner of Fiji to South Africa for four and a half years before returning to his village where he was headhunted for this role.
AMS projects coordinator Ashley Bulgarelli remarked “we look forward to exploring opportunities to support Mr Alacakau and Marist Brothers High School. We work with a number of Marist schools and educational projects in Fiji and are committed to helping support the growth in educational opportunities in the region.”
