St Joseph’s Mabiri located in Central Bougainville continues to be a significant Marist educational enterprise for the people of Bougainville. Br. Mark Fordyce recently visited Bougainville to investigate future immersion placements and project resourcing for the school.
St Joseph’s Mabiri currently has students from Prep through to Year 10. Following discussions with the Principal, Mr Gerard Epa, and his management team, Mabiri’s application to expand to a Year 11 and 12 school is their number one educational priority over the next two years.
Linked in with this expansion is the need to offer computers as a national subject examination. Mabiri has a project proposal currently with Marist Solidarity for the purchase and installation of 40 computers. St Joseph’s is happy to continue to offer placements for Australian Marist Solidarity immersion groups in 2018.
St Joseph’s Mabiri is one of four Marist schools in the District of Melanesia. The other three are St Dominic’s Rural Training College, Vanga Point in the Western Solomons, St Joseph’s Tenaru, Honiara and St Michael’s Technical College Santo in Vanuatu.

Marist Volunteers Australia (MVA) began as a way to meet the needs of lay Marists who expressed a desire to work in communities and projects overseas. MVA falls under the umbrella of AMS – the overarching brand of international aid of the Province of the Australian Marist Brothers.
Whether it be working in rural Cambodia or assisting a new education initiative in Vietnam, MVA is supporting local communities across Asia-Pacific and beyond. For more information visit: Marist Volunteers Australia
