Providing health and rehabilitation services to children and young people with a physical disability at LaValla School.
LaValla School is a core program of a local NGO Marist Solidarity Cambodia (MSC) where poor, physically disabled students can undertake primary education whilst gaining access to physiotherapy and rehabilitation services. An estimated 21% of Cambodian children have one or more disabilities, indicating that the population of people with disabilities will increase in the future.
The LaValla School Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Centre is vital to each of the 100 students and is helping to facilitate their reintegration into mainstream society through rehabilitation. The Centre provides therapeutic facilities and services as well as prescribing assistive devices and mobility aids.
In 2017 we are pleased to report that the Centre undertook 335 physiotherapy sessions, 54 hydrotherapy sessions as well as 324 general medical health checks. The school also received visits from medical professionals from across the world who provide a range of services including surgical interventions for which 15 students were recipients to help with their mobility.
The Health and Rehabilitation Centre at LaValla school increases opportunities by providing access to physiotherapy and rehabilitation for the young people attending the school. This increased opportunity and access contributes to many long-term societal and personal changes, particularly as new students begin and existing students graduate.
LaValla School and the Health and Rehabilitation Centre at LaValla School is contributing to the breaking down of the negative stigma faced by people with a disability. To learn more about LaValla School or to donate, visit: https://bit.ly/2wWNKYj
