Reflections from volunteer Taylor Schmierer upon her return from 3 months volunteering at New Horizins, Vietnam.
“Embarking on my volunteering experience in Vietnam, I didn’t quite know what to expect. However, I arrived to a very welcoming and enthusiastic community. Everyone I encounter, is always smiling, waving and yelling out ‘Hello’, with some even stopping to ask me some questions or get a photo – it really is like being famous. Each school I help at and also at New Horizons, I am blown away by the level of enthusiasm and happiness the students show. They try very hard to engage in the work. It has been an incredible experience to watch the students improve in their English and confidence.”
“I have been fortunate to have so many amazing opportunities and experiences over the last few months. From being invited to my new friends’ homes and joining in with a meal with their families, visiting Pagoda’s and Temples, going to Festivals and National Parks, just to name a few. It has been a life-giving experience getting to know what life is like in Vietnam, very different from the norms in Australia. This has given me a new-found appreciation for the little things in life, which I had definitely taken for granted and has helped me realise what is important.”
The New Horizons Centre, Vietnam is an education centre supported by Australian Marist Solidarity that focuses on teaching English and computer skills. The New Horizons project is run by the Brothers with the assistance of two staff and volunteers. It provides learning opportunities to young people from this under-resourced and developing area that is located 15km to the west of Ha Noi city. While the programme mainly provides English classes, it also gives the young and unemployed opportunities to attend vocational training. The Student Assistance Programme provides for up to 80 underprivileged students financial support for schooling needs such as bicycles, uniforms, breakfast, etc.
The opportunity exists for possible aussie volunteers to participate in their SUMMER HOLIDAY program from the 5th June until mid July. This would be ideal for University students who may wish to travel and volunteer for a couple of weeks during the upcoming mid-year break.
