Phase two of new Marist primary school gets underway
Planning for the second phase of redevelopment at the Abafala Catholic Primary School is now underway with the first stage completed in time for an opening ceremony held in January at the start of the 2016 school year.
The school provides vital education to children from the very-poor remote mountain community of Abafala in the sub-district of Quelicai (pronounced Kelikai) in Baucau.
Phase one has involved the demolition of two badly-damaged buildings and the construction of a new building with three classrooms, a toilet block and rainwater tanks. 135 young people, from grades one to four, are now attending classes in a safer, vastly-improved learning environment.
The second phase involves construction of the second building with classrooms, library and additional toilets to cater for students from grades five to eight. Once completed, more than 230 children will attend the school.
The local Timorese community initiated the project and are participating in the reconstruction work, with many receiving on-the-job training.
Marist Solidarity is committed to supporting our project partners in Timor-Leste and raising funds for the school’s second phase.
Your donation will help us achieve our vision to improve the quality of learning for these very disadvantaged children and help us shape the future of education in Timor-Leste.
