A conclusion to our May 22, 2017 story As it happened: St Marcellin School Moulovibazar progress.
A momentous day for St Marcellin School, Bangladesh has arrived with the completion of an important retaining wall that in the monsoon season will provide security to the river bank walls surrounding the school and in particular, the girls hostel.
Work initially started on this 300 feet long, 15 feet deep and 7 feet tall wall on the 6th of February 2017 but by June the works had grind to a halt due to the monsoon season. With work able to commence again in December 2017 it took 5 more months to finish the project. Importantly, the project contractors used local labour from a neighbouring tea plantation for the non-specialized works. Employing approximately 30 men and women from Moulovi Tea Estate who each benefited by more than doubling their normal daily salary than if they had worked in the tea gardens. This has helped a number of families to increase their meagre income and at the same time has developed a sense of belonging to the Marist Brothers mission in Moulovibazar.
St Marcellin School, Moulovibazar aims to strengthen the education system in the Tea Gardens as well as the individual abilities, knowledge, attitudes and skills of the students. The school requires additional donations to continue their vital work in the community.
AMS would like to thank the generous support of the Diocese of Koln whose support has enabled this project to be undertaken.
