Supporting non-formal education in Baucau, which plays an important role in the educational formation of children and young people.
AMS is pleased to announce that the Dorrie Alcock Memorial Fund through the Australian Communities Foundation have partnered with us to support the Child & Youth Centre Ponta Leste, Timor-Leste.
The Child and Youth Centre Ponta Leste is a non-formal education centre in Baucau that plays an important role in the educational formation of children and young people. Ponta Leste complements the formal education sector by offering further learning opportunities outside of the morning or afternoon session that students receive at school. The four main subjects that are taught are English, literacy, computer skills training and a sports program, as well as offering an annual child rights workshop. Ponta Leste is also a space where children can come and study and engage socially with one another in a safe environment. Ponta Leste is an enormously popular centre with children and young people in Baucau. In 2017 there were 241 students enrolled in the program, however, this has increased in 2018 to 403 students ranging in age from eight to eighteen. Approximately two-thirds of the students are female. Ponta Leste supports six volunteer teachers to deliver the program which is equally important in a country that lacks employment opportunities.
AMS would like to thank the Australian Communities Foundation specifically the Dorrie Alcock Memorial Fund for their generous support of the Child & Youth Centre Ponta Leste, Timor-Leste.
