Earlier this year, Australian Marist Solidarity (AMS) agreed to continue supporting the ongoing outreach activities of the Sunflower Children’s Centre in Baguio.
The centre is addressing the causes and impacts of neglect across 20 highly-vulnerable communities across the Cordillera Administrative Region.
It is fully supported by community leaders and involves representatives from the local municipality. Activities like seminars and workshops are facilitated by Filipino social workers and trained centre staff.
In a recent report to AMS, social worker Eric says he has spent time in the rural municipality of Ifugao, where he worked with children and adults in various settings.
He says children participated in a focus group that helped them to self-identify issues and problems they face within their community, such as anger and violence.
With Eric’s guidance and encouragement, the focus group then looked at and discussed possible solutions, including anger management techniques and identifying the signs of behavioural change.
This is just one of at least 20 outreach programs that the Sunflower Children’s Centre is undertaking in 2016, thanks to the latest AMS funding agreement.
To make a tax-deductible donation or to learn more about the programs that are giving a much-needed voice to marginalised communities in The Philippines please visit the Sunflower Children’s Centre project page on the AMS website.
Children and adults recently participated in a focus group in the rural municipality of Ifugao as part of the Sunflower Children’s Centre outreach programs.
