The Philippines

Map
Population: 92 million
Capital City: Manila
Main Languages: Filipino and English
Major Religion: Christianity, Islam and Catholicism

By working together, we can continue to support human rights in the Philippines and work towards ensuring every child has access to education, healthcare and shelter.

Country Information

The Philippines has a rich history that combines Asian, European and American influences, but human and economic development has been slow to progress. There are wide disparities in income and quality of life across the region, with social inequalities being the greatest amongst indigenous people, fisher folk and women. Its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire makes the Philippines extremely vulnerable to natural disasters, which only worsens economic and social development. With over 40% of the population living below US $2 a day, it is unlikely that the country will reach the Millennium Development Goals on poverty, education and maternal health.

Marists in The Philippines

The Spanish brought Catholicism to the Philippines during the 16th century, but it wasn’t until 1948 that Marist Brothers from the United States were sent to the country. The Catholic Church has played a major role in defending human rights and promoting social equality in the Philippines. Since arriving in the Philippines, the Marist Brothers have worked to establish schools, universities and housing programs across the country.

Kuya Centre for Street Children | PH0002

Working with street children to give them a second chance

Orphaned, abandoned and runaway children are among the most destitute in Filipino society.  Surviving as best they can on the streets in the heart of Manila, they are highly susceptible to abuse, exploitation and malnutrition.  Staff from the Kuya Centre for Street Children work with young people living as vagrants, using games and drama to focus on topics such as […]
