“The United Nations’ (UN) International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition is annually observed on August 23 to remind people of the tragedy of the transatlantic slave trade and demand for freedom that transcends all limits of time and space (UNESCO, 2017).”
The UN International Day for International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition aims to remind people of the tragedies and consequences of slave trade and also to bring people on the margins into the center of our thoughts. This day is to shed light on the fight against all forms of oppression and racism. Several of AMS’s project partners deal with the lasting effects of modern slavery. In Bangladesh, the tea gardens of the Mouvlibazar region where workers earn as little as 2.5 US cents per kilogram of tea leaves picked. In Thailand, The Marist Mission Ranong and The Marist Mission Centre in Samut Sakhon focuses on Burmese Migrant children who are denied access to mainstream education.
Whilst there are distinct differences in all of projects that AMS works in partnership for, there is a unique and underlying commonality to project access to quality education to youth on the margin’s across Asia and the Pacific. With your support these projects will be able to continue to support local children, in local communities across the region. There is a better future possible for them.
