Brother Allen Sherry, AMS CEO said “This is a donation that gives assurances to our partners there as they train young people in the village to offer them a better future. It’s a local initiative by young men that came through Brother Tony Clarke’s visit by chance with a flat tyre in that location.”
Bob Stewart Pty Ltd is a third-generation family business in Kew, Melbourne that specialises in the supply and retail of school uniforms and other clothing and has been a staunch supporter of international development projects for many years.
Thanks to their generous support the computer training and carpentry program in Uai-lili, Timor-Leste are secured from 2017 – 2019. These programs provide computer and carpentry training for young people in a village previously known as a dangerous place to visit. The village use to be home to destructive and aggressive young people who would throw rocks and stop vehicles driving through the village. The new programs have given these young people purpose and possibilities for employment.
Maway, director of this program at CTUF, was previously a leader of a gang in the area until he decided to turn his life around in 2013. With the assistance of the Marist Brothers and Marist Solidarity, Maway secured an abandoned school building with approval from the local chief. In 2014, he established CTUF, with a staff of 3, and the computer program that has had 238 participants from 2014-2016. Under Maway’s leadership CTUF has also established a small carpentry training workshop which teaches 5 students DIY skills that they can use at home or for work.
